About Us Our Philosophy Our Teachers Our Programs Contact Us News

During the summer, Champion provides high quality, individualized tutoring, designed to reinforce concepts learned during the past year and also to help prepare for new academic challenges. As always, we offer one-on-one tutoring—flexible to your child’s schedule—in all general subjects including elementary education, as well as foreign languages including Spanish, Latin, and French. Summer is also a great time to get a head start on standardized test preparation. Our trained teachers can chart a course of study best suited to your child’s test prep goals.

For summer 2009, we are proud to introduce several new programs, including an SAT-Math “Boot Camp” and a series of writing workshops. These small classes are designed to reinforce fundamental skills before the start of the next academic year. Our teachers are experts at presenting these “nuts and bolts” of learning in a fun, creative, and intellectually challenging environment. Please call soon to reserve a spot—space is limited!

SAT-Math “Boot Camp”

June 15–19, 10:00am–1:00pm

June 22–26, 10:00am–1:00pm

August 10–14, 10:00am–1:00pm

Over and over, students share with us that their biggest SAT Math challenge is recalling material they learned years earlier. The first part of the class will provide an in-depth, comprehensive review of all major math topics covered on the SAT, and will assign a series of problems designed to reinforce that day’s topic. Then, students will participate in individualized break-out sessions in which they meet one-on-one with a trained SAT instructor to discuss concepts learned that morning and to begin working on the problems. Class size will be kept small in order to allow for an intense focus both on process and on strategies to maximize scores.

Writing Workshops

All writing workshops are divided into two parts: the first half of the session, students receive instruction on the fundamentals of grammar, while the latter half is more free-form, focused on generating material and teaching students how to overcome common anxieties about writing. Each day, your child interacts with at least two writing instructors who focus on his or her unique style of learning.

GETTING STARTED (ages 7–10)

July 13–17, 10:00am–1:30pm

We believe that spelling, parts of speech and punctuation can be really fun! Does your child need to brush up on the basics? Or does he/she just love to come up with stories? Our teachers use activities like Mad Libs, dictionary games, and “bananagrams” to reinforce skills that help kids jump to the next level in their written work.

BE A WRITER! (ages 11–15)

July 20–24, 10:00am–1:30pm

Your child chooses the topic and we provide the inspiration! Danielle DeRise uses creative techniques aimed at helping students develop and organize thoughts into a complete project. Skills like generating clear sentences and supporting details will be incorporated into topics that your child enjoys exploring.

YOUR BEST STORY (age 16+)

July 27–31, 10:00am–1:30pm

The best college essays are told like a story: vivid, scenic, and with gripping details. Set yourself apart from the rest by allowing your unique talents and experiences to shine on the page. Grab the committee’s attention with an essay that’s well-crafted and memorable. We will guide students through a series of creative brainstorming sessions aimed at helping them discover “their” topic and creating a genuine voice in their writing.
