“Introduction to Drupal”

This course will teach the skills needed to use Drupal for your organization’s website. Participants will learn how to choose and apply themes, add images such as logos and photos, place content, and make regular updates by using the text editor effectively. One of the central questions of this course is: “What makes a great website?” To answer this question effectively, we will focus on doing things the “Drupal way” (i.e., no HTML or CSS experience necessary). As we learn the foundation, we will also explore the hundreds of Drupal themes that are available, and students will learn how to choose the one that is right for them; we will also pay close attention to which themes will make your website work well on iPhones, Androids, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. We will also examine what makes for a sustainable design and learn what we can do to minimize technical headaches.

This course is eligible for the University of Virginia’s “Education Benefits Program,” and reimbursement documentation will be provided to all UVa employees.

Decoding Your Customer, or Market Research 101

Most small or start-up businesses don’t have the resources to conduct regular market research, such as surveys, focus groups, and interviews of their customer base, as well as reports on industry trends.

Are you one of those business owners? Do you feel like you have no budget for customer research? That’s great news, because the best customer research you can do costs nothing. OK, it costs a little bit of your time and some thinking, and maybe a couple of freebies for your customers. But the rewards for your time and effort can be significant in terms of gaining—and retaining—new business.

Join Craig Honick, a 20-year social research professional and business consultant who studies customer culture and behavior, to learn the fundamentals of decoding how and why your customers make the choices they do about products and services, especially yours! Craig will teach you how you can accomplish your marketing goals by doing something you do every day, and have likely been doing since you were a kid: listening to people’s stories.

In this course you will learn to become the main research instrument in your business, and how to do so in an ethical, unbiased way. You will learn how to engage your current and potential customers in meaningful conversations and ask questions that will teach you how they perceive and interpret your products. These techniques will allow you to truly hear what your customers think, and why they make certain choices. By decoding your customer, you will learn the difference between what youthink is important and what your customers think is important.

During the workshop and with Craig’s guidance, you will draft an individual Market Research Plan for your business, while also learning thefollowing concepts and techniques:

  • How to engage customers and potential customers in conversation
  • What questions to ask and how to interpret the answers without bias
  • What the “customer narrative” is and how it works
  • What a “customer tribe” is and how to build one
  • What to do with the information you gain, and when to make adjustments to language, product display, marketing, employee policies, etc.
  • How to keep yourself and your company continually learning and evolving when it comes to marketing
  • When to hire a professional market research firm (or not)

Dates & Times: TBA

Cost: $75

Public Speaking for Professionals

We designed this workshop for business professionals who are ready to improve their speech-writing skills, refine their speaking and presentation abilities, and relieve the fear and pressure most of us associate with public address. We will accomplish this by drawing on exercises and techniques from the theater. This course will improve your ability to engage (and, more importantly, to maintain) your audience’s attention, and it will help you expand your vocal pitch, tone, and range. We will identify and learn to organize different types of informative and persuasive speeches, and practice both writing and delivering them extemporaneously, so the next time you are called to the podium, the vivacity of your ideas—and your confidence in them—will be clear to your listeners. Bring a brown bag dinner, and come prepared to move and think outside the box!
